kwey chap | 7:52 PM

So they say when you see a long queue, the food must be good.

Upon a student's recommendation, I asked along a friend to try out this famous Kwey Chap store in Toa Payoh.  WARNING AHEAD : Hunger and profuse drool guaranteed!

Unless you dig innards, you don't know what you are missing in life!

The meal at $8.50 for 2 persons is not pricey at all.

childhood comfort | 11:41 PM

Have you ever had one of these moments in life when, chancing upon some food stall, you just had to order a particular food item which you have not eaten for a long time and that which reminds you of your childhood days?

When I was a kid, I would eat the following Indian dish, dosai, regularly for breakfast.

Located just next door, I would bring over an egg and present it to the Indian cook at the stall to prepare my dosai.

My colleague reminded that the dosai tastes better with rock sugar.  That, too, was a favourite dressing (not sure of the correct word to use as I do not cook!) that I had long forgotten and which I just had to try again - in moderation of course.

The vegetable curry and coconut paste - the standard dressing for the dosai.

Yeah, I had rediscovered one of my long-lost comfort food.

soft and sweet | 10:05 AM

19 August 2008
I was just passing by the Home Economics Kitchen when I saw 2N3 having a bakery lesson. I did what my palatal instint told me - walk in and take pictures (and hopefully get some free samples! haha!).

I never had Home Economics lessons when I was a teenager. Thus baking is totally Greek to me. Now that I am going to move to a new place with a full kitchen setup, I could perhaps learn a trick or two from...KIDS??!!! Haha.

This looks easy.

Not to mention, fun too, especially when you play with food with good friends.

A boy with an apron kneeling before an oven - now that's a sight you won't get to see often.

I hope he has washed his hands.

He's licking his lips while putting the dough into the mould tray, and perhaps adding extra flavouring and texture along the way?

I'm watching the dough through the glass opening of the oven. This takes too long. Who am I kidding? Do I really have the patience to bake?

The teacher-in-charge, Madam Teo, signals me over to...of course, taste some muffins! YUMMY!

This is how we break the muffin.

These are all MINE!

After one delicious bite, I just had to take a picture of its succulent contents.

"Sir! Take our picture!"

"Mine too!"

Yes, most boys and guys hate this segment.

He was simply sitting on the floor and waiting infront of the oven for his muffins to be ready!

Why are some bits outside the wrapper?

The chef beaming with pride, despite the misfire with the dough.

Surveying boys at work in the kitchen.

Their proud creation.

His long wait infront of the oven turned out totally fruitful.

"Hmm, which one should I eat first?"

I believe there were more than 2 muffins on the plate...

Well, passers-by, like myself, have `stunned' them while the owners were unaware.

I think I have had too many muffins for a day.

fill me up! | 2:50 PM

A long time friend whom I caught up with recently drove us up to JB for supper last night. He claimed that he had found a place that sells better food than that at the famous Sentosa hawker center. I jumped onto the band wagon at the suggestion immediately as I have not been across the Causeway for ages!
The simple lighting at this open air eatery.
Not that I have been drinking....
I swear I was only drinking sugar cane juice with sour plum.

I am never a rojak fan but this dish with mango paste is just superb!

BBQ chicken on satay sticks.

This is some crunchy vegetable dish with a very spicy chilli paste.

Sambal squid.

This meals costs less than S$20!!!

Arggh! The petrol is so darn cheap in Malaysia. And to think the locals are paying a lower rate than Singaporeans!

soupie | 8:23 PM

The Earnest Restaurant along Jalan Baseh Road is apparently famous. I believe it has been around since I was a teenager.

The way I like my Yong Tau Foo - the food items emersed in clear soup without the noodles.

ginseng chick? | 7:37 PM

I had lunched at this Korean Restaurant at Toa Payoh central yesterday. Tucked away in an inner stretch parallel to the main row of shops facing HDB Hub, it is a small outlet which exudes an air of authentic flavour.

What I like about Korean food is the tasty side dishes. The four above passed my palate test.

This grape flavoured drink is colourless which was a pleasant surprise. Well, I did expect the typical Ribena purple appearance.

Now, I had wanted to relive the refreshing Ginseng Chicken soup which I had during my trip to S Korea a few years back. This particular soup base from the dish I had ordered, however, tasted like something out of maggee mee seasoning, paling miles from any authentic Korean cuisine. Sigh.
