
Surging waters in southern China's swollen Pearl River delta threatened millions of people in China. Fifty-one people are reported dead or missing since June 6 in Guangxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Hunan Provinces. People in the region are getting around by boat until the floodwaters recede.

In Yuecheng, a resident read the newspaper in a wooden boat while sitting outside a post office. The flooding has caused the evacuation of 1.6 million people in the southern provinces after China was already dealing with the aftermath of the May 12 earthquake that hit southwestern China.

The Mississippi River broke through several levees including the Indian Grave Drainage District levee north of Quincy, Ill. and Meyer, Ill., where floodwater ran off into farmland. Officials in the states along the Mississippi are watching 27 levees where water may crest near the tops.
