sex, sexy & sexier | 8:03 PM

Sex. WOAH! The controversial 3 letter word. Is sex really as controversial as many of us perceive it to be? Do we make such a big deal of it like hormone-raging teens do? As far as the media is concerned, sex sells and rocks (not just rings or rattles) the cash register. Is being sexy wrong?

Do indulge me in the following illustration which I came across on the local Innit Nuffnang site. The chart features the most popular posts in the past ten minutes and the numbers reflect the number of clicks by online readers.

Why Men Marry Bitches

4 out of 5 of the above feature topics on physical attractiveness and/or human sexuality in one form or another and blog readers lap them all up like thirsty dogs on a hot humid day.

I have to admit. When I first encountered the chart, I was gripped with curiousity. I wanted to find out how Dawn Yang became the gorgeous celebrity blogger she is today. While I feel disturbed by the fact that a schoolgirl's modesty has been outraged, I want to read about the factors behind this outrageous act. Of men marrying bitches? What is the juice behind this controversial title?

I'm back after a hearty dinner.

Where was I? Yes the top reads according to Nuffnang.

What comes to mind is the chicken versus egg question - which came first? Were those blog entries written because readers with sex written all over their psyche pre-existed? Or perhaps those sexualty-themed entries had caused readers to lose their innocence?

Implied in the 2 questions is this assumption that sex is dirty, wrong and corrupts the mind. Now, since when has sex become such a dirty idea? If it was so, all of us would not be conceived at all. The entire human race would cease to exist since any form of bodily contact was therefore perceived as taboo. In my opinion, human sexuality was tainted when what was meant to be a private affair behind closed doors became public fodder in the media, unleshing the pandora box of shock, fear, shame and its accompanying diseases. Interestingly, those feelings and physical ailments have taken on a new twist in the last century - people now take pride in celebrating their oozing sexuality and forefronting the resulting diseases like AIDS as causes to be celebrated.

In the past, a couple would hold hands and kiss each other on the cheek and attempt nothing more. Everything beyond that remains in the realm of the imagination and the context of marriage. Over time, expressions of human sexuality have evolved of course. Hop onto a bus or the MRT and it is not uncommon to encounter the PDA -Public Display of Affection - even amongst teenagers. A certain respectable local politcal leader had explained that the government's rejection of calls to repeal a law against unnatual human sexual behaviour was for the simple reason that Singapore society is still relatively conservative. Thus it is not surprising to read in the news forum letters now and then frowning over young people's PDA. Along with pandora's package, we have seen a rise in incidents relating to teenage sex, abortions, the use of digital devices to upskirt females by males, molestations, divorces among adults and the list goes on.

The finger of blame often falls on the media. While some cry foul over the fact that there is too much skin and sex in the media, does it help when one does so from the trenches of ultra-conservative-ness? Would anyone, especially the young, sporting the super tight outfits and perhaps with assorted embellishments of body piercings accompanying the emo-look, even bother to listen to these stuffy voices of reason, despite their good intentions?

[10.23pm] to be continued....
